Greeley, CO — Adam DeRito, candidate for U.S. Congress in Colorado's 8th District, issued the following statement today in response to Congressman Gabe Evans' vote against H.R. 3492, legislation designed to protect minors from irreversible medical procedures.
"Had I been your Representative today, I would have proudly voted 'yea' in support of H.R. 3492. Our children are the future, and I will not vote to allow them to be subjected to irreversible medical mutilation," DeRito said.
DeRito criticized Evans for failing to stand up for families and children in Colorado's 8th District, calling the vote a clear example of misplaced priorities in Washington.
"This vote should have been simple. Protect children. Give families clarity. Draw a firm line when it comes to irreversible decisions involving minors," DeRito continued. "Instead, it appears Gabe Evans chose to side with political pressure and activist ideology rather than common sense and parental rights."
H.R. 3492 sought to establish federal protections for minors by limiting access to permanent medical interventions and ensuring that children are not subjected to life altering procedures before they are capable of informed consent.
"As a veteran, a public servant, and a mentor to many young people in our community, I believe leadership means having the courage make the right moral and ethical decision when children are at risk," DeRito said. "If sent to Congress, I will always vote to protect children, defend parents, and uphold basic medical ethics."
DeRito concludes; "It is time for leadership that protects the innocence of children, upholds family values, and demands truth ahead of politics."
